The TWRA will accept quota applications only through midnight on Thursday, July 20, giving hunters just eight more days to prepare their applications and submit them. The July 20 deadline is for applications to be RECEIVED by TWRA, not a postmark deadline.

As of 10:30 p.m. EDT this evening, a petition seeking to remove Commissioner Tom Hensley from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission had collected only 192 signatures. Petition organizers have a goal of collecting 10,000 signatures to present to Governor Phil Bredesen asking him to exercise his gubernatorial power to remove Hensley from the commission, in response to Hensley's role in closing a portion of Lock 5 refuge in Wilson County to public hunting.

TnHunting.Com has learned that a lawsuit has been filed in a Kentucky court that could change the future of hunting on Land Between the Lakes. The TWRA announced today that it has identified a vessel possibly involved in a fatal crash on Boone Lake in Sullivan County early Sunday morning. An afternoon press release by the agency's Region IV office in Morristown also apparently denies an Internet rumor stating that a former UT football standout might have been involved. As the Chattanoogan.Com's Richard Simms describes today (see link to his story in our fishing newsroom), the 23 state parks that charge a $3 access fee will end those fee programs on July 1. The fees, which had been charged since 2000, were eliminated due to money appropriations in the state budget. In addition to general recreationalists who visit state parks, the change will help anglers who fish various state parks across the state.

After the opening day of TWRC's June meeting, a reversal of the decision to close 420 acres of the Wilson County Lock 5 refuge to hunting appears doubtful. As outdoors columnist Bob Hodge notes in today's News Sentinel, Melton Hill Lake has become East Tennessee's hot spot for musky, and has far exceeded the expectations of fisheries biologists for Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. After a massive, 21,000 fish-strong stocking effort several years ago, the East Tennessee lake is currently pulling out-of-state anglers in for the muskellunge fishing experience.
