The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency broke the news today. The move comes after HAAP also cancelled deer hunts in the fall.
"The installation is attempting to address new security requirements for the hunting program and will not be able to have the program approved in time for the spring turkey hunts," HAAP Natural Resources Specialist Bruce Cole said.
Cole added that the 2008 deer seasons at HAAP may be cancelled as well, though plans are to have the new security measures implemented at that time.
When HAAP does begin offering hunts again, it will require all hunters — regardless of age — to have successfully completed a hunter education course. Currently, the installation simply follows state regulation, which allows for hunters born before 1969 to be exempt from the requirement.
The change would put HAAP in line with Fort Campbell, which also requires hunter education regardless of age.
HAAP also does not accept the TWRA's new apprentice license.
