Quota application period underway

Tennessee hunters have just over a month remaining to apply for turkey quota hunts that are scheduled for this spring.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is accepting applications for the spring hunts through Feb. 13. Applications must be received by 11:59 p.m. Applications are available and will be accepted at any TWRA license agent, or online at the TWRA website. Mailed applications will not be accepted.

Hunters can apply for up to 12 choices, but will only be drawn for one. Applicants may not use the same hunt code more than once, and no person may apply more than once.

A $20 permit fee is required with each application, except for holders of a sportsman's license, lifetime sportsman's license, or seniors with a Type 167 permit.

When applying at a license agent — which include many convenience stores, most Wal-Mart stores and outdoor supply stores and many county court clerks across the state — hunters must remain at the location while the application is processed, after which they will receive a receipt and a confirmation number.

Any hunter having problems with applying for a quota hunt may contact TWRA at 615-781-6621 during regular business hours (9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. EST).

This spring, there are a total of 25 hunts at six different locations: Chuck Swan State Forest, Meeman Shelby Forest/Eagle Lake Refuge, Natchez Trace State Forest, Oak Ridge WMA, Wolf River WMA, and Yuchi Refuge at Smith Bend. The dates are as follows:

Meeman Shelby: March 31, April 2, April 5; April 7, 9, 12; April 14, 16, 19. There is a 50 hunter quota for each hunt at Meeman Shelby.

Oak Ridge: April 5-6; April 12-13. There is a 175 hunter quota for each hunt at Oak Ridge. Hunting stops at noon each day, and successful hunters must be at the checking station by 1 p.m. The hunting area may be reduced or hunts cancelled for national security reasons. Hunters successfully drawn for the Oak Ridge hunts may scout on March 29 from 7 a.m. until noon.

Wolf River: April 4-6; April 18-20. There is a 25 hunter quota for the first hunt and a 30 hunter quota for the second hunt at Wolf River. Hunting stops at noon each day, and hunters must be at the checking station by 1 p.m.

Yuchi Refuge: March 28-30; April 11-13; April 28-30; April 22-24; April 29-May 1. There is a 10 hunter quota for each hunt at Yuchi Refuge. Hunting stops at noon, and no access is allowed by boat.

Hunters can apply for a quota hunt in parties. To do so, the party leader must create the party, select the hhunt choices and decide whether or not a hunter with a lower priority can join. A party number will be assigned and printed on the party leader's receipt. Applicants wishing to join the party can then enter the party number when they file their application. Parties may not exceed five members. If applicants have varying priorities, the lowest priority in the party becomes the default priority for the party.

A number of Tennessee's wildlife management areas and refuges will have non-quota hunts during the 2008 spring turkey season. Those include AEDC, Bear Hollow Mountain, Catoosa, Cheatham, Cordell Hull, Falls Creek Falls, Fourth Fractional, Holly Fork, Kyker Bottoms, Laurel Hill, LBL, Meeman Shelby, Natchez Trace, North Chickamauga Creek, Prentice Cooper, South Cherokee, Williamsport, Wolf River, Cross Creeks NWR, Hatchie NWR, Tennessee NWR.

Also, three national wildlife refuges will have quota hunts. Applications for those hunts are handled through each refuge's office. The hunts include: Chickasaw NWR (April 3-6, April 10-13, April 17-20), Lower Hatchie (April 3-6, April 10-13, April 17-20) and Reelfoot and Lake Isom NWRs (April 4-6).
