Youth hunt is this weekend

Archery season will close at 30 minutes past sundown Friday evening, making way for Tennessee's youth hunters to get the first crack at whitetails with firearms.

Tennessee's annual young sportsman's hunt will be held this Saturday and Sunday. The hunt is open to hunters ages 6-16.

Each hunter must be accompanied by a non-hunting adult. The adult is not required to have a hunting license, but must remain in position to take immediate control of the hunting weapon if necessary, and must wear the required 500 square inches of fluorescent orange.

Each hunter participating in the hunt must possess proof of successful completion of a hunter education course if they are age 10 or older. Hunters ages 13-15 must also have the junior hunt/fish/trap combo license, and hunters age 16 must have the regular adult hunting license and appropriate supplemental big game tag. Hunters ages 12 and under do not need a hunting license.

The bag limit is one antlered deer and two antlerless deer in Units A and L, and one deer (either sex) in Unit B. Antlered deer taken on the hunt count towards the statewide bag limit.

Hunting is permitted on all private lands and public hunting areas. In addition, many of Tennessee's wildlife management areas are open to hunting during the hunt.

A second youth hunt will be held in January.

Archery season will resume across the state at 30 minutes prior to sunrise Monday morning. The first general firearms season opens on November 3, with the muzzleloader season.
