Archery season off to decent start

Despite warm temperatures that reached 90 degrees in many parts of the state, Tennessee archery hunters fared relatively well Saturday, killing a total of 1,632 deer.

Last year's opening day harvest was only 1,153. However, many hunters spent opening day last year dodging thunderstorms that plagued the Midsouth throughout the day.

By noon Sunday, another 404 deer had been checked in at big game checking stations across the state, bringing the total opening weekend harvest to 2,036.

Last year's opening weekend harvest was 2,327.

Among the deer killed Saturday, 549 were bucks, 988 were does and 95 were antlerless bucks, including 21 button bucks

Giles County led the way at noon Sunday, with 76 deer checked in, followed by Hawkins County (69) and Roane County (64). Somewhat surprisingly, the state's two traditional leading counties, Hardeman and Hardin, checked in with only 26 and 16 deer, respectively.

The archery season continues through October 26. The next season to open will be the youth season, on October 27. Muzzleloader season begins November 3 and gun season opens November 17.
