Tennessee's spring hunting season for squirrels will open tomorrow across the state and will continue through June 10. The bag limit is 10 squirrels per day.
According to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, spring is a good time biologically to hunt squirrels. Females have litters of three to five young twice during the year, in February and in late July or early August. May through June takes advantage of a peak in the population after the first litters have left the nest.
Squirrel populations fluctuate from year to year, but overall have remained stable in Tennessee. Recent abundant mast crops and a relatively mild winter may result in more squirrels in the woods this spring, the agency says.
Many wildlife management areas are open for spring squirrel hunting. More information can be found on the WMA page in the small game section of TnHunting.Com.
The common gray squirrel, as well as red and fox varieties can be taken during the hunting season.
TURKEY SEASON CLOSES
The spring turkey season will come to a close on Sunday, giving hunters one last weekend to chase gobbling toms. The season has been open since March 31. The next big game season to open will be the deer archery season on September 22.
