Many hunters entered the 2007 turkey season on Saturday worried about the spring's concepts. The month of March was too warm and had the turkeys too far ahead in their game, which would lead to henned-up toms and not enough action, many hunters theorized.
But if harvest totals released by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency are any indication, hunters had a pretty good opening weekend, after all.
According to TWRA figures, 5,173 birds were checked in at big game checking stations on Saturday, while another 2,467 were tagged on Sunday, for a grand total of 7,640 birds harvested on opening weekend.
Of that number, 7,604 were male birds, while 36 were bearded hens.
Of the male birds, 1,123, or 14.8 percent, were jakes, while 6,481 were longbeards.
The top county for opening weekend was Dickson County, with 266 birds killed. Maury County was second, at 248. Other top counties were Giles, at 189, Greene, at 179, Wilson, at 173, and Montgomery, at 172.
As of Monday afternoon, another 800 birds had been checked in at checking stations. Also, more than 1,000 birds were killed during the youth hunt last weekend, meaning Tennessee's 2007 turkey harvest is already approaching 10,000 birds.
The spring season will continue through May 13.
